Preventing Driver Fatigue
Mirabel, July 5, 2012 – The Centre de formation du transport routier Saint-Jérôme (CFTR) enthusiastically welcomes the new measures introduced by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) to combat driver fatigue. The new measures supplement the strategy developed by the CFTR in 2010 to deal with the problem of driver fatigue. According to CFTR Director Bernard Boulé, “Although compliance with the Regulation respecting the hours of driving and rest of heavy vehicle drivers is a mandatory and necessary measure, we found that it was not enough to compel drivers to take necessary action to avoid driver fatigue. We believe that drivers should be provided with information and training to help them avoid driver fatigue.”

Truck Driver Shortage
THE CFTR PLAYS A LEAD ROLE IN TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF DRIVERS
Mirabel, April 30, 2013 – With Mario Sabourin, Executive Director of the Comité sectoriel de main-d’œuvre de l’industrie du transport, in attendance, representatives of the CFTR administration outlined various ways to address the shortage of truck drivers announced by the Conference Board of Canada in February. The Conference Board study predicts that by 2020, Canada may need as many as 30,000 truck drivers. This shortage resulting from the many truck drivers retiring and the small number of people entering the occupation to replace them will be harmful to the economy. The same study suggests that truck driving should be recognized as a specialized occupation in order to attract a larger number of people, including immigrants, into the labour pool.
